Adventures in Wedding Dress Shopping

This weekend, I was super excited to finally go wedding dress shopping (!!!). One of my dearest friends and I ventured out Saturday morning in the freezing cold on this dress-hunting adventure.

To be honest, I thought I would fine one. I mean, I am not super picky. I don't have "the perfect dress" in mind - quite the opposite in fact.

It could be long or short, ivory, pink, mint green, wiggle skirt or full skirt, 1950s or 1980s, sleeves or no sleeves, strapless...I just want a pretty dress that fits!

We went to a few vintage shops around Minneapolis and most had only a handful of fancy dresses - I didn't realize how few are stocked...I guess that's because I've never really needed a fancy dress before.

We then had a great time at Via's Vintage - they had the widest and most beautiful selection of dresses, however, even with my friend and the darling shop girl holding the seams together (team effort, friends!) we couldn't get them to zip. (Damn this rack.)

After a mid-morning bloody mary, we then went to a a boutique that specializes in vintage wedding dresses, but because you need to make an appointment to actually try them on, we stayed for only a few minutes. The dresses there range from $300 to $2800, so I am thinking about making an appointment and seeing if I can find anything that will fit my rack right off the rack. (I learned that alterations can cost $400, so I would rather not have to go that route.)

This is my current debacle: I want to find a pretty dress, ideally vintage, that fits. However, I was aiming to spend under $500. Is that crazy? I know that this is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and that money shouldn't really matter, but in the end, it's a dress I am going to wear for one day, and I don't want to spend a months' salary on a dress. (You know me, and I am THRIFTY.)

I am going to definitely have a round 2 (and maybe 3 and 4) of dress shopping. Who knew it would be this hard?

Love to you, dears!

  1. Wedding dress shopping sounds so fun (esp if bloody mary's are involved), but frustrating at the same time. I think its great that you have such an open minded approach! I think your dream dress/ spending limit is do-able! I also wonder if you found a nice dress in another color, if its possible to bleach it white, or off white? Maybe that's a no-no in the dress world haha, but I am thrifty too and that may open up some more possibilities! I can keep my eyes open while thrifting too if you want! :)

  2. Oh,I do not envy you. $500 is a totally do-able budget though! My dress ended up being the most expensive part of my wedding but vintage dresses were out of the question for me. If all else fails Ebay has a ton of vintage wedding dresses

  4. Oh bummer you didn't find one that fits - but maybe there will be some at the shop you make an appointment at!! I know you will find the right one!

Side note - Via's is amazing! A little spendy for this thrifty girl but I loved looking through the goodies they had!

  5. Wedding dress shopping sounds terribly stressful. I'm glad you were able to fit in a bloody mary. You deserved it. I hope you find the perfect dress and I hope the process of finding it doesn't include too much frustration. Good luck, pal.

  7. That vintage wedding dress shop sounds like a dream. I wish I would have gone the vintage route...but being that I got married almost 9 years ago, finding one around was not really an option (it's amazing how much thrift and vintage shops have evolved since then!) I think my sister got her wedding gown for around that much - though it was not vintage, it was beautiful and very bohemian...so I think that is a doable amount. Best wishes with the hunt Amanda :-)

  9. I think that's a totally doable budget- especially since you are open to so many styles! You can do it, just be patient. Sounds like you are having fun with it, at least! I love all of these photos you found :)

  10. Not crazy at all. My Dress was 200 dollars - I didn't buy vintage though. What I did was buy a bridemaids dress and pick it out in a cream color. It was inexpensive AND had pockets - seroiusly awesome. Plus, I got to pick from like 5 different shades of white.

  11. Thank you so much for your sweet comment!
I don't really prefer a certain brand - I just look what colour looks best on the packaging, haha. This time L'Oréal won me over (and it was on offer)!

  14. Hey...I actually had the same issue where I couldn't find ANYTHING that I liked that was in my size and price range. So I had a seamstress make mine custom--custom design, custom fit!!! TOTAL with fabric, I spent $600. I'd be happy to refer you on to the lovely lady who sewed mine, she was absolutely fantastic! I can send you some photos too...
